Sarah Kaufold, Minister of Music
A former California native, Sarah is an experienced conductor, singer, and teacher who strives to interweave the teaching of vocal pedagogy into the choral experience.
Prior to moving to New England, Sarah directed church choirs for 10 years in Southern California and Missouri. She has sung professionally throughout the Los Angeles area and more recently in the “quiet corner” of Connecticut, while teaching voice privately. Sarah taught choir and general music at the junior high and high school level for four years and directed the Women’s Choir and Collegiate Choir at UConn.
Sarah received her Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from University of Connecticut with intensive graduate study in choral conducting from California State University, Los Angeles. Sarah currently teaches voice at the Pomfret School and sings with Novi Cantori. She is shares her days with her three vivacious children and supportive husband, Bill.
Charlie Houmard, Organist
Charles is Director of Music at The Pomfret School, Pomfret, CT. He holds a Doctorate in Conducting from the University of Texas at Austin.
He obtained the Master’s Degree from Indiana University and his A.B. from Oberlin College. Dr. Houmard has held faculty positions at Beloit College as the Director of Vocal Studies, and at Dartmouth College, where he directed the Chamber Singers and taught course in Music Theory and Music History. He is the founding Artistic Director of Cantabile Women’s Chorus of the Upper Valley and has served as Minister of Music at various churches throughout his career.
He has recently completed a Fulbright Scholar Grant in Choral Conducting to Bolivia in affiliation with the Catholic University San Pablo of Santa Cruz and APAC, Asociación Pro Arte y Cultura.
Linda Austin-Small, Parish Administrator
A native Californian, Linda came to St. Mark’s in 2013 from Christ Church Greenwich where she was the Music Administrator for six years during a time of challenge and transition.
She had been actively involved with the choir program for 16 years before joining the staff and her three sons sang in the “Choir of Men & Boys.” Linda chaperoned many years of choir camp in the Berkshires and attended three overseas tours. Linda also taught preschool at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Greenwich for 16 years where she created and implemented a curriculum for 2.5 – 3 year olds.
A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Linda and her husband, Peter, have 4 children and 5 grandchildren and became happy residents of the Quiet Corner when their daughter moved to a group home in Willimantic supporting adults with autism. She and her husband enjoy traveling, gardening, opera, and the New York Mets.
Jack Zaino, Music Assistant
Originally from Cromwell, CT, Jack is an active member of the musical world at UConn. He has sung with the UConn Chamber Singers since 2012 and there met Sarah Kaufold, who invited him to teach Sunday school music at St. Mark’s – a place that he is proud to now call his church home.
At St. Mark’s, Jack designs and teaches the Youth Music Ministry (YMM) sessions, directs the Christmas pageants, coordinates music for Faith Row’s Vacation Bible school and is a regular singer and guest conductor in the Chapel Choir. Outside of St. Mark’s, Jack is an active songwriter, arranger, teacher, musical director, and soloist. Jack holds a B.A. in Music from the UConn School of Fine Arts as well as a B.S. in Education from the Neag School of Education.
He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Curriculum Design and Instruction at UConn and teaching preschool and kindergarten general music at Birch Grove Primary School in Tolland.
