The Vestry is delighted to announce that the Rev. Brian Blayer has accepted the call to serve as the new Rector of St. Mark’s. We will officially welcome him on July 24th, with his first Sunday being July 30th. Father Blayer has served since 2010 as rector of Grace Church in Whitestone, NY, and before that as a priest in Suffolk County, NY. A graduate of Queens College and General Seminary, he also taught English and religion in area schools.
Brian’s wife, Susan, is a social worker with degrees from Columbia and from Union Theological Seminary. Their daughter, Sophia, is eleven and is eagerly anticipating horseback riding in this area. The family, along with their dog, Buddie, are looking forward to meeting everyone at St. Mark’s.
The parish discernment and recruitment team evaluated a pool of talented candidates. Their vote, like the subsequent vote of the vestry, was unanimous to call Brian. Both groups recognized in Brian a priest who has considerable experience and the right energy and vision to advance St. Mark’s ministries and mission at UConn and in the wider community.
During the interview and search process, various discernment committee and vestry members spoke of being impressed by Brian’s spiritual presence, warmth, intellect, focused listening, and passion, and were excited by his ideas for lively, engaging liturgy, and campus ministry. The vestry celebrated Eucharist with Brian and appreciated his approach. We look forward to welcoming Brian, Susan, Sophie–and Buddie.
