Sarah Kaufold, Minister of Music


Sarah is an experienced conductor, teacher, and singer who strives to interweave the teaching of vocal pedagogy into the choral experience. Sarah holds a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from University of Connecticut with extensive graduate study in choral conducting from California State University, Los Angeles. Before pursuing her masters degree, she obtained a B.A. in Psychology from California Polytechnic University, Pomona where she also began her studies as a music educator. Her choral teaching experience includes four years as a choir teacher at the junior and high school level in public and private school in California, as well as directing the Women’s Choir and Collegiate Choir as a graduate student at the University of Connecticut.  She currently serves as the Assistant Conductor of the Chorale at Eastern Connecticut State University.

Although she began her choral career by singing in ensembles at the collegiate level and in church and community choirs, Sarah has sung professionally throughout the Los Angeles area and New England while maintaining a private vocal studio for almost 15 years. She is currently a member of the professional chamber choir, Collegium Ancora, located in Providence, RI.  Sarah began working as a church choral director in 2000 and has served at St. Mark’s Chapel since 2012.  She loves to travel with her three vivacious children and supportive husband, Bill.


Charlie Houmard, Organist

charliehCharles is Director of Music at The Pomfret School, Pomfret, CT. He holds a Doctorate in Conducting from the University of Texas at Austin.

He obtained the Master’s Degree from Indiana University and his A.B. from Oberlin College.  Dr. Houmard has held faculty positions at Beloit College as the Director of Vocal Studies, and at Dartmouth College, where he directed the Chamber Singers and taught course in Music Theory and Music History.  He is the founding Artistic Director of Cantabile Women’s Chorus of the Upper Valley and has served as Minister of Music at various churches throughout his career.

He has recently completed a Fulbright Scholar Grant in Choral Conducting to Bolivia in affiliation with the Catholic University San Pablo of Santa Cruz and APAC, Asociación Pro Arte y Cultura.


Linda Austin-Small, Parish Administrator

A native Californian, Linda came to St. Mark’s in 2013 from Christ Church Greenwich where she was the Music Administrator for six years during a time of challenge and transition.

She had been actively involved with the choir program for 16 years before joining the staff and her three sons sang in the “Choir of Men & Boys.” Linda chaperoned many years of choir camp in the Berkshires and attended three overseas tours. Linda also taught preschool at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Greenwich for 16 years where she created and implemented a curriculum for 2.5 – 3 year olds.

A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley,  Linda  and her husband, Peter, have 4 children and 5 grandchildren and became happy residents of the Quiet Corner when their daughter moved to a group home in Willimantic supporting adults with autism. She and her husband enjoy traveling, gardening, opera, and the New York Mets.


Jack Zaino, Music Assistant

jackzOriginally from Cromwell, CT, Jack is an active member of the musical world at UConn. He has  sung with the UConn Chamber Singers since 2012 and there met Sarah Kaufold, who invited him to teach Sunday school music at St. Mark’s – a place that he is proud to now call his church home.

At St. Mark’s, Jack designs and teaches the Youth Music Ministry (YMM) sessions, directs the Christmas pageants, coordinates music for Faith Row’s Vacation Bible school and is a regular singer and guest conductor in the Chapel Choir. Outside of St. Mark’s, Jack is an active songwriter, arranger, teacher, musical director, and soloist. Jack holds a B.A. in Music from the UConn School of Fine Arts as well as a B.S. in Education from the Neag School of Education.

He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Curriculum Design and Instruction at UConn and teaching preschool and kindergarten general music at Birch Grove Primary School in Tolland.
