Also needed is an assortment of general household cleaning tools and products. Move in date is Saturday, March 2 when furniture and household goods from WAIM will arrive. Dear Friends:

Omitted from yesterday's weekly news was a reminder that the monthly lunch making at Covenant Soup Kitchen (the second Sunday of the month) is canceled this month.  Another group specifically asked for this Sunday.

Information about UConn's annual Metanoia from University President Susan Herbst:

To the University Community:
Each year, the University of Connecticut convenes a Metanoia around an important issue of our time.  This year’s Metanoia, titled “Youth for Change,” is on change itself.  It will be a discussion of the most pressing issues facing young people today, as well as a set of workshops on how youth (people under 24) can effectively act to change the world.  It will be a conversation on the issues themselves and a set of dialogues on nuts-and-bolts strategy.  “Youth for Change” will be for young and old, and for everyone from the political novice to the seasoned activist. This years’ Metanoia will host a number of exciting keynote speakers. The kick-off event is Yara Shahidi on Saturday, February 9 @ 6pm, followed by David Hogg on Monday, March 4 @ 7pm, both at the Jorgensen Theatre. Details on the David Hogg event and other speakers are forthcoming.

But “Youth for Change” is much more than its keynote speakers: it is a broad range of exciting panels, workshops, and events organized by the UConn community.  The Steering Committee invites you to design your own Metanoia event.  We are currently accepting proposals for the week of March 4-8.  “Youth for Change” has been generously sponsored by the Office of the President, the Undergraduate Student Government (USG), and the Student Union Board of Governors (SUBOG). For more information, contact co-chairs Chris Vials (christopher.vials@uconn.edu) or Wanjiku Gatheru (wanjiku.gatheru@uconn.edu).

Best wishes, Linda

Dear Friends:

Here is the news of the week:
  • This Sunday:  Clergy and lay parish delegates at ECCT’s 2018 Annual Convention voted to enter a season of Racial Healing, Justice and Reconciliation of at least two years and named the second Sunday in February as a day to start a conversation in parishes.  To begin this conversation here at St. Mark’s, Rev. Brian has invited the Rev. Aaron Geddis from the Apostolic Fellowship Church in Bloomfield as our guest preacher on Sunday!  Welcome Rev. Geddis!
  • Do you know about the Last Green Valley?  You’re in it! It was designated a National Heritage Corridor in 1994.  Its web site (http://www.thelastgreenvalley.org) states:  The Last Green Valley is not a traditional park. Instead, citizens, businesses, nonprofit cultural and environmental organizations, local and state governments, and the National Park Service work together to preserve and celebrate the region’s cultural, historical and natural heritage.  Maggie Breen, the North East Regional Missionary invites everyone to attend a gathering on Thursday, February 28  at Christ Church, Norwich at 6:30PM to learn about The Last Green Valley.  Maggie, along with Rev. Rachel Thomas, SE Region Missionary, are hosting this meeting to facilitate conversation between LGV and anyone who is interested in eco-justice, conservation, nature, etc.  Please do come!
  • The 2019 6th Annual Interfaith Film Series is presented in collaboration with the Connecticut Council for Inter-religious Understanding,  the National Conference for Community and Justice,  the Hartford Seminary, and the Wadsworth Atheneum of Art and  takes place the first three Sundays in March.  Dates are March 3, 10 and 17 and films will be shown at the Wadsworth Atheneum.  More information is available in your Sunday bulletin or from Bruce Steinway.
  • Rev. Brian will be on vacation from February 14-25.  For pastoral emergencies, please contact the warden.
Best wishes, Linda

Dear Friends:

The burst pipe drama continues!  The new flooring in the hallways has been removed.  Sheet rock in all offices has been cut to allow for drying. The insurance adjuster has visited once and will visit again. The kitchen floor must be replaced.  Sounds like restoration will take a few months. The good news is that the office computer and copier seem to be in good working order. But the lower level is cold as some baseboard heat has been dismantled.  The nursery has become a store room.  Inventory of all damaged items is yet to be done.

Here is the news of the week:
  • Tomorrow is the First Friday Organ Recital from 12-12:30.  Charlie will present a preview of next Wednesday's organ concert. Please bring a sandwich and a friend.
  • David Von Behren, a Yale student for a Masters Degree in Organ Performance, is the organist for the third concert in the Brombaugh Restoration concert series.  David is a delightful 23 year old Nebraskan who is also an accomplished violinist  performing at both Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center.  His program will feature works of Mendelssohn and Bach.
  • The budget discussion continues this Sunday. Please plan to attend the second round of budget discussions following the 10am service. Everyone is encouraged to participate and offer creative and prayerful ways of addressing the current serious financial situation.
  • News from Husky Radio:  Rev. Brian’s weekly program on Husky Radio is on Mondays from 1-1:30. This past Monday, the inaugural program of Crossroads featured a conversation with new vestry member Bill Cook on how faith played a role in his professional life and how he lives is faith on a daily basis.  On Monday, February 4 the conversation will be with Madison Day and an neighbor discussing the vocation of parenting.  Check it out!
  • Year end statements will be available for pick up in Narthex this Sunday.

Best wishes, Linda
